The next must have item is the Puffer Jacket. This jacket provides essential life saving protection to mountaineers and adventurers who venture into dangerous environments in search of thrills. Interestingly this is where it’s roots can be traced back to.
The Puffer Jacket history goes that in 1936 Eddie Bauer invented a quilted down for his Skyliner Jacket – who would have though that almost 80 years later it has become a symbol of disruption in the fashion industry. Legend has it that a team of adventurous mountaineers, a team of seven Americans and one British climber were ambitiously attempting the first ascent of K2. K2 being the second highest peak in the world after Everest. Bauer produced the Kara Koram Park, aptly named after the mountain range which borders Pakistan and China which has K2 amongst its peaks.
In a letter to Bauer’s partner, William F. Niemi, dated January 18, 1953, expedition leader Charles Snead Houston called it,
“the finest article of cold weather, high altitude equipment I have ever seen.”
Mountaineering has many tales and non more famous that that of the Pete Schoening and what would become known simply as “the Belay”.

In today’s flat shoe dedication – part of the capsule closet series – is the ultra luxurious Italian Shoe maker, Tods.
The shoe is named after the 133 rubber pebbles – “gommini” which are embedded into the sole of each loafer. These pebbles guarantee incredible comfort and are one of the company’s best sellers. In the early 1900’s when Diego Della Valle’s grandfather, Filippo founded a shall shoe factory.
When in the 70’s Diego enters the family shoe business he initiates a major turnaround strategy which sees the company gain international acclaim. Diego was brilliant at marketing the product by giving shoes to Italian Celebrities and using images of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant gave the illusion that the brand had been around for a long time.

This week’s dedication to shoes of brilliance continues with another firm favorite namely LK Bennett. The brand – much coveted by the fashionable Brits – gained international critical acclaim when the Duchess of Cambridge wears them. Arguably the most recognized shoe worn by her is the Sledge Heel (In the flesh color known by LK Bennet as “Trench”) which has now gained iconic status the world over. The sleek stiletto heel includes a modern platform, softened almond toe and made from 100% Leather.

So this week I’ve decided to dedicate all my posts on the perfect capsule closet on shoes and more specifically flat shoes. As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I used to love wearing heels until I could no longer suffer through the agony of running around in heels all day. Shoes which were once treasured now caused me to want to violently toss them in the garbage. I guess as we get older one of the things that happens is when it is warmer (and it gets very warm in Cape Town) our feet swell quite a bit. This was not an affliction I had previously encountered so it took me quite a while to figure out that it was that which was causing the trouble. So I have already touched on the Sketchers which my Podiatrist recommends here.
Next shoe brand that I adore and can highly recommend is Melissa.

I can’t imagine that anyone is having as bad a day as Kevin Spacey. Anthony Rapp accused the “House of Cards” star, Kevin Spacey of making sexual advances towards him when he was 14! The incident happened in 1986 when Rapp was invited by Kevin Spacey to a party as they were both working on a Broadway Production. Rapp was watching TV in a bedroom when Kevin Spacey placed him on the bed and lay on top of him. Rapp told BuzzFeed News;
“I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It is just deeply confusing to me”.
Rapp went on and stated that Kevin Spacey “was trying to get with me sexually”. At the time of the incident, Kevin was 26. Much criticism has been leveled against Spacey for his overnight statement in which he uses his apology to Rapp as the platform to come out and tell the world he is gay.

The next must have item in our capsule closet has to be the little black dress also known as L.B.D. In fact I would go so far as categorically stating that no modern women’s wardrobe can be considered complete if it does not have one of them. The popularity of this must have item has by Fashion Historians been ascribed to the 1920’s designs of Coco Chanel.

As we continue collating our capsule closet lets recap the items we have already covered in earlier posts on this site:
- Biker Jacket – also known as Moto Jacket
- Plain White Tee
- Trench Coat
- Tote Bag
- Ballet Flats
- Black Blazer
- Blue Jeans
- White Shirt
- Black Pants
The aim of this series of posts in which I am compiling a suggested capsule closet is because I am using this as motivation and inspiration to purge and to quote Marie Kondo; “Spark Joy”. Lately I have lacked the energy, enthusiasm and motivation to tackle and clean up my wardrobes which – I might add – desperately need attention. There always seems to be something more captivating to do then tackle this but I am finding that by writing this series it is giving me some much needed inspiration to go forth and clean up.

The next must have item in any capsule closet is a biker jacket. The biker jacket’s roots are military – having been worn by German Fighter Pilots during World War I as a protective outer layer.
Throughout the jackets various incarnations it has managed to maintain its solid popularity amongst the fashionable and is synonymous with celebrities such as Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kendall Jenner and Jennifer Aniston to name a few as is evident below.

Bottega Veneta, founded in early 1960’s creates bespoke consumer goods with a primary focus on men and women’s ready-to-wear clothing, small leather goods and select home items. The company was launched by Vittorio, who ran the company and Laura Moltedo who was it’s creative director and president for many years. Interestingly this luxury goods company, unlike its competitors does not put any label’s or logos on its goods and the only label will be found inside. It is best summed up by its philosophy of when your own initials are enough – which is so exhilarating for a luxury brand. With a showroom in New York it’s headquarters are in Milan. The company merged with Gucci in July 2001.
Most of us will instantly recognize their trademark handbag made of woven leather strips. This much sought after bag is uniquely crafted from the finest materials. More recent incarnations include soft suede and plenty of fringing.
